Principal Engineer w/ Team of 8+

About SeedInvest

SeedInvest is the creator of, the largest venture/startup equity crowdfunding platform in the U.S., and has enabled nearly 500,000 users to access new investment opportunities, successfully funded north of 200 startups, and raised nearly $50M for startups in the first half of 2020 alone. We are in the first innings of having “a few startup shares” in every American’s investment portfolio and believe our growing suite of products will give rise to a new generation of investors and startups.

The Role

As a Principal Engineer at SeedInvest, you will be expected to firstly be a phenomenal teammate, as well as a technical leader and mentor to the entire engineering team. You will be expected to help execute upon and eventually drive the design, development, and improvement of our entire suite of products at SeedInvest.

If you are product-minded, interested in building something meaningful, and love to work with startups in a startup environment, we’re excited to hear from you!

Product & Engineering at SeedInvest

The engineering team is also dubbed the product team at SeedInvest; the team’s overarching mission is to build a top-class suite of products and experiences for the new wave of venture capital investors and startups. Our entire engineering team is able to run full-stack across product responsibilities with a core responsibility/emphasis on engineering (tech ops, infrastructure, back-end, front-end) and healthy contributions to product management and design.

We choose the technology we work with based on a combination of near and medium-term pros and cons while looking to design systems for the long-term. While we are therefore generally a technology agnostic team, our core stack currently consists of:

  • Angular/Vue
  • Django/Python
  • AWS

We launch products in bite-size releases and iterate quickly. We balance structured planning and process with flexibility -- we are constantly optimizing for speed and correctness.

  • We have daily standups.
  • We keep 1 engineer on-call each week.
  • We have monthly retrospectives and are continuously improving documentation.
  • All pull requests are subject to code review.
  • We deploy multiple times per week.

What To Expect

As a company, we expect to both double the user base and investments as we look to snowball the growth we saw in 2020. As an engineering team, we expect to rapidly scale the processing of and access to our startup investment opportunities.

While we keep longer-term roadmaps iterative, the following are several products/projects we are exploring for 2021 based on company-wide strategy:

  • Building a new investor on-ramp experience
  • Overhauling and re-architecting our online “invest” flow
  • Launching a post-campaign product for our portfolio of startups
  • Institutionalizing (and re-designing) internal APIs and services for select externalization

You will:

  • Lead by example and setting the bar high for others by contributing high quality, production-ready code
  • Provide technical and architectural direction for the development, design, integration, testing, and maintenance of our platform
  • Work with management and other engineers to build the technical vision
  • Introduce and drive practice of best-in-class software processes for engineering teams
  • Manage technical debt to ensure our development velocity stays responsive and predictable while minimizing production incidents of our operations
  • Attract, engage, retain, and mentor teams of exceptional engineers and managers
  • Become an expert on startup investing, due diligence, venture capital, and fundraising

Our Immediate Expectations of You:

  • 5 or more years of experience as a technical and project leader
  • 10 or more years of experience with software engineering
  • Experience and track record in designing, building, and deploying secure, scalable services
  • A passion for enabling and motivating people to do their best work
  • Ability to work very well cross-functionally in a flat startup
  • Ability to think rigorously and make hard decisions/tradeoffs quickly and correctly
  • Comfort in a fast-pace environment with a high level of autonomy

Extra Credit If:

  • You have experience working with remote teams
  • You previously worked in fin-tech
  • You previously worked in a highly regulated environment and privacy/security of customer data is of utmost importance to you
  • You previously worked at or founded a high-growth startup

We are looking for a Principal Engineer in Manhattan, New York. The entire SeedInvest team is currently working from home and we are open to the idea of ongoing support for remote work. We had an office in Manhattan prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and expect to have at least partial co-location in the longer-term.
